thoughts before my surgery

Tomorrow at 1:00pm, I will undergo surgery to remove a polyp that developed on my left vocal fold this past fall. The song in the video above has been going through my mind as the words fit this situation so well. The video is from a worship service at Dogwood Church almost 6 years ago.

My recovery will take awhile. For the first 4 days, I will have to be completely silent–no singing or speaking. Days 5-7, I can utter 1-2 words a few times a day. Week 2, I can speak at about the level of an extreme introvert (1 on a scale of 1-7); the next week I can go to a 2; the next, 3 and so on. It will be at least 6-8 weeks before I will be able to lead worship again.

The surgery should restore my vocal abilities significantly, but there is a slight chance of severe complications. No matter the outcome, the words to another song come to mind–“you give and take away, blessed be the name of the Lord.”

  1. Kevin,

I was thinking about you already today, as your mom came to my mind on this Mother’s Day. So first of all, Loma was amazing and the best friend mom a guy could ever ask for. My heart hurts when I think of your life without her. I pray for you in that way today.

Secondly, I have also been praying for your surgery. I will continue tomorrow. God bless you as you sleep, have your surgery, and recover. I will be following closely.

  2. God has a way to silence us one way or another for His purposes and ultimately His glory. Sometimes our lives are so loud that even though we are involved in ministry and doing His work, we have difficulty hearing His voice. May this time be a blessed time of healing and listening and being loved on by our Savior.
